John supported many causes, but as his cancer progressed and he began focusing on what mattered most to him. For gifts of money, that quickly narrowed down to two particular causes:

For Feeding America West Michigan Food Bank

The Endowment exists to provide Feeding America West Michigan with sufficient baseline annual operational support as to permit the Food Bank to stay focused on food handling instead of on fundraising, keeping the dream of making West Michigan hunger-free alive by keeping it affordable.

In 2008 John and son Jeff Thomas created NPII to be a nimble research and development center for the nonprofit sector, imagining and test-driving better ways for charity agencies to do their work, ideally then spinning those approaches off to the groups that will benefit from using them, and moving on to develop the next great idea.

Both groups/causes are 501(c)(3) charity organizations; donations to both of them qualify for charitable gift tax deductions when and where applicable.
